Stand Up Paddleboarding: Origins and Evolution
Stand Up Paddle , also called SUP or simply Paddle , is a water sport that involves standing on a board and paddling with a paddle.
First practiced by Polynesian kings on large wooden boards carved from tree trunks, Stand Up Paddle was intended to help them explore the surroundings and trade.
It was then Duke Kahanamoku , the Hawaiian swimming champion and surfing legend, who revived it in the 1940s, then his friends the Beach Boys who used it on Waikiki Beach to accompany their students during surfing lessons, take pictures of them and monitor bathers.
It was only later that big names in watersports, such as Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama , among others, revived the sport. They practiced it on downwind courses along the coasts of Maui, as well as during island-hopping trips, participating in the famous Molokai-O'ahu outrigger canoe race. Boards became shorter, and stand-up paddleboarding experienced a resurgence in popularity.
The different families of Stand Up Paddle
Today, there are two main families of SUPs :
-
The first, historically, was that of rigid Stand Up Paddleboards ,
-
The second, which has arrived more recently on the market, is that of inflatable Stand Up Paddleboards .
Since then, this discipline has developed enormously. It first exploded in the United States and Australia , then gradually established itself in Europe , and more particularly in France .
An accessible and versatile sport
What attracts so many people is that Stand Up Paddleboarding is a very accessible sport. Getting started is not complicated and it can be practiced alone, with friends or family, at the sea, on a lake, in a river, etc.
Stand-up paddleboarding can be practiced in the waves for surfing and a more exhilarating experience, or on flat water for a more leisurely cruise . Beginners can use a single board for both, but with experience, it's best to have two different boards.
