Raft Competition

A competition raft is a breed apart: a fast hull, lightweight construction and an aggressive shape built for racing. Aquadesign is the official supplier of the World Rafting Federation (WRF) — World Cups and international championships are raced on our rafts — and offers the Race WRF to clubs, national teams and federations, with custom builds available through our sales department.

What sets a competition raft apart?

A racing raft has little in common with a commercial descent raft. Where a rental raft prioritises volume, stability and carrying capacity, a competition raft is built for one thing: going fast and reacting instantly to every stroke. That means a fast hull and an aggressive shape that grips the water less, a lightweight construction that accelerates without inertia, and the rigidity to transmit the crew's power faithfully. All of it stays engineered for whitewater: a tough hull, control in high flows and durability through intense training.

Racing rules also demand specific fittings. A competition raft must be self-bailing to shed water in the rapids, fitted with an over-pressure valve in the floor, footstraps (at least one per paddler) for bracing, plus a safety line around the tubes and a bow line. Nothing is left to chance: every detail serves both performance and safety on the racecourse.

The racing formats: R6 and R4

International competition is contested in two formats, both powered by single-blade paddles:

  • R6: a crew of 6 paddlers (plus one reserve). Under federation standards, the boat measures roughly 4.20 m long by 2 m wide. It is the historic format of competition rafting.
  • R4: a crew of 4 paddlers (plus one reserve), on a shorter boat of about 3.40 m by 1.70 m. Livelier and easier to stage, it has become a racing format in its own right.

Each format has its own dynamic: the R6 relies on collective power, the R4 on the agility and synchronisation of a tighter crew.

The disciplines of competition rafting

A full competition adds up the points from four disciplines to decide the overall standings:

  • Sprint: a short, explosive effort of two to three minutes of hard paddling, each team setting off alone against the clock. This is the pure power test, always raced first.
  • Head-to-Head (H2H / RX): two crews launch side by side in direct elimination. A nervy start and contested lines make it the most spectacular discipline.
  • Slalom: crossing a series of upstream and downstream gates in order, without touching the poles, over two runs. The technical discipline par excellence.
  • Downriver: covering a multi-kilometre river section as fast as possible, managing effort over distance and the difficulties of the course.

A good racing raft has to excel everywhere: snappy in the sprint, precise in the slalom, sure-footed downriver.

The WRF standard and our official-supplier status

Aquadesign is the official supplier of the World Rafting Federation (WRF). In practice, international competitions and World Cups are raced on French Aquadesign rafts: it is the most demanding recognition a whitewater manufacturer can earn, because a racing boat is judged by the best crews in the world, run after run. Our competition rafts are built to meet the requirements of official events.

The Race WRF

The Race WRF is our dedicated racing raft, selected for WRF international competitions. Ultra-light construction, aggressive shape and racing rigidity: it is made for the clubs, national teams, federations and organisers who want to field equipment approved at the highest level. Available in the racing formats, it pairs naturally with the rest of our whitewater kit. Browse all our boats in the rafting range, including the Dropstitch-floor Pulse rafts when rigidity and tracking matter most for training.

Custom builds: in your club or national-team colours

Because we control the entire manufacturing chain in our own factories, we build custom competition rafts: bespoke colourways in the colours of a club, a national team or a sponsor, plus specific markings and fittings. For a team project or a racing-fleet order, send your request to our sales department, who will study it with you.

Equipping a racing team

A competition raft is never used alone. To prepare for a season, add lightweight, hard-wearing raft paddles, buoyancy aids suited to intense effort and compliant whitewater helmets for both training and racing. Our team advises clubs and federations on sizing their equipment, and our repair workshop and after-sales service in France, at Oraison (04), supplies spare parts and longevity season after season.

Frequently asked questions about competition rafts

What is the difference between a competition raft and a standard raft?

A competition raft is lighter, stiffer and built around a fast hull with an aggressive shape, for speed and responsiveness. A standard raft prioritises volume, stability and carrying capacity for leisure descents or rental. Both are whitewater craft, but their priorities are opposite.

What are the R6 and R4 formats?

They are the two official racing formats. R6 fields a crew of 6 paddlers (a boat of roughly 4.20 m), R4 a crew of 4 paddlers (about 3.40 m). Both are paddled with single-blade paddles and alternate at the World Championships.

What are the disciplines of a rafting competition?

Four disciplines: sprint (a short effort against the clock), head-to-head (two teams in direct elimination), slalom (crossing gates) and downriver (a multi-kilometre course raced for the fastest time). The combined points decide the overall standings.

Is Aquadesign really a WRF supplier?

Yes. Aquadesign is the official supplier of the World Rafting Federation. International competitions and rafting World Cups are raced on French Aquadesign rafts, including the Race WRF.

Can a competition raft be customised in a club's colours?

Yes. We produce bespoke colourways and specific fittings on a custom basis, for a club, a national team or a sponsor. Send your request to our sales department to study the project and its feasibility.

Is the Race WRF also suitable for training?

The Race WRF is built for racing, but it fits into a complete programme. For regular training, many teams add versatile rafts from the range and favour a Dropstitch floor when rigidity matters. Our advisers help you build the right fleet.
