How to choose a touring stand up paddle board
A touring board is not simply a bigger all-round: it is a hull built for efficiency. Where a versatile board chases manoeuvrability, a touring board is built to cover distance with the least effort. On a multi-hour outing, every stroke that carries you a little further makes all the difference. Three things create that edge: the shape of the hull, the length of the waterline and the ability to carry gear.
The hull and nose: the key to efficiency
What sets a touring board apart at a glance is its tapered, pointed nose. Up front, the board slices through the water instead of pushing it: it doesn't slap into the chop, it cuts through it. The result is a longer glide with every stroke and a cruising speed well above an all-round's. The straighter hull line also improves tracking: the board sets off straight and holds its line, so you're not forever correcting side to side — a real energy saving on long straights.
Length and width: glide versus stability
- Length (from 11'6 to 14' and up) drives glide and tracking: the longer the board, the straighter and further it runs. It's the primary touring parameter.
- Width balances speed against stability. A slightly narrower board reduces drag and gains glide; a generous width reassures and lets you carry a load without worrying about balance.
- The right balance: touring is precisely the sweet spot between all-round stability and race speed. A newcomer to distance will favour an accessible 11'6 hull; a confident paddler will step up to 12'6 or 14' for pure performance.
By body weight and distance
- Sporty cruising and day trips: an 11'6 such as the Yla 11'6, Tempo 11'6 or Arko 11' — long enough to glide, stable enough to stay comfortable for hours.
- Long distance and a brisk pace: a 12'6 like the Fyra 12'6 or AIR SWIFT 12'6, faster and more directional.
- Racing and long expeditions: the FIRST 14', made for speed and kilometres, best suited to paddlers who are already at ease on the water.
Touring, all-round or race: where does touring sit?
The versatile (all-round) board is short and wide: nimble, stable, perfect for getting started. A race board is long, narrow and demanding: speed above all, at the cost of stability. Touring sits between the two: faster and more directional than an all-round, more forgiving than a race board. It's the logical choice as soon as covering distance becomes a genuine goal, on lakes, calm rivers or the coast. Going self-supported: gear and overnight touring
Touring's great strength is autonomy. The long hull provides volume and buoyancy: the board carries the paddler and the load without sinking. Touring models feature bungee straps at the front (and often loops at the back) to lash down a dry bag and carry everything you need to camp out.
- Place a dry bag at the front, under the straps, packed long and low with heavy items at the bottom, so it doesn't spoil the glide.
- Keep that bag for what you won't need during the day: sleeping kit, meals, repair kit and pump.
- On a board, weight is felt far less than on your back — especially with the current helping — so you can allow yourself a little more comfort than on a hiking trek.
Construction for distance: double-layer and pressure
On long boards, stiffness is vital: a hull that flexes loses all its glide. That's why our touring boards use a Fusion double-layer construction: the double layer, essential on longer lengths, is heat-bonded to keep performance while optimising weight, without the double gluing that weighs classic builds down. Our lighter models also benefit from Light Dropstitch technology for easy carrying.
For inflation, we recommend 13 to 15 PSI: rigidity is already excellent from 12 PSI, at 13 PSI the board keeps an ideal flex, and 15 PSI is reserved for ultra-stiff use. Our dropstitch fabrics are tested up to 22 PSI, but never exceed 18 PSI: an over-inflated board becomes brittle and stresses the seams. Beware of heat too (full sun, sand, roof racks), which quickly raises the pressure.
Our touring board range
Six boards cover every paddler profile, from a first big tour to a timed race:
- The Yla 11'6, Tempo 11'6 and Arko 11': your way into touring — glide and stability for sporty cruising and day trips.
- The Fyra 12'6 and AIR SWIFT 12'6: longer and faster, for committed touring and paddlers who love a rhythm.
- The FIRST 14': our race-oriented pack, for pure speed and long distance.
Want to share the outing with others? Take a look at our giant paddle boards too. And don't forget the kit: a well-set SUP paddle, a leash, fins matched to your water, a high-pressure pump and a transport cart to reach the launch fully loaded.
Touring for clubs, rental centres and local authorities
Guided tours, paddle raids, distance clinics: our touring boards equip nautical centres, paddle schools and local authorities who want to offer more than a short cruise. Rugged construction for intensive use, spare parts available, a repair workshop in France and trade pricing: tell us about your fleet and we'll build the offer with you.
Why choose Aquadesign
A French water-sports specialist since 1988, Aquadesign designs its boards to its own specifications and has them produced in its own factories. Development takes place in France, in Oraison (04), which is also home to our after-sales and repair workshop: servicing, spare parts and technical know-how stay reachable and responsive. Our materials are chosen to last and our products meet CE requirements. An Aquadesign touring board is gear built to survive seasons of kilometres.
Frequently asked questions about touring paddle boards
What length of paddle board for touring?
Reckon on 11'6 to 14'. An 11'6 (Yla, Tempo, Arko) stays accessible and versatile: ideal for getting into distance while keeping stability. A 12'6 (Fyra, AIR SWIFT) runs faster and tracks better on long straights. The 14' (FIRST) targets performance and racing, for a paddler who is already at ease.
What's the difference between a touring and a versatile paddle board?
The versatile (all-round) board is shorter and wider, nimble and reassuring for cruising. The touring board is longer, with a tapered nose that slices the water: it glides better, goes faster and holds its line over distance. Touring stays accessible to motivated beginners, unlike narrow, unstable race boards.
Can a beginner start on a touring board?
Yes, provided you choose a still-wide, stable 11'6 such as the Yla 11'6 or Tempo 11'6. Touring is the right compromise between all-round stability and race glide. A 14' race board, on the other hand, calls for experience: better to move up to it once you've found your feet.
Can you go camping with a touring paddle board?
That's exactly what it's for. The long hull delivers the volume needed to carry paddler and load, and the front straps let you lash down a dry bag. Pack heavy items at the bottom, keep the bag flat and low to preserve the glide, and reserve it for camping gear, meals and the repair kit.
What pressure should I inflate a touring board to?
Between 13 and 15 PSI. From 12 PSI rigidity is excellent; at 13 PSI the board keeps an ideal flex for paddling; 15 PSI is for ultra-stiff use. Our fabrics are tested up to 22 PSI, but never exceed 18 PSI: over-inflation makes the board brittle and stresses the seams. Watch out for heat, which raises the pressure.
Does Aquadesign offer pricing for clubs and rental centres?
Yes. We support clubs, rental centres, nautical bases and local authorities with rugged touring boards, available parts, a repair workshop in France and trade terms. Get in touch to build an offer suited to your fleet and your activities.
