How to choose your paddle

Choosing a paddle comes down to three things: length, material and the number of sections (how compact it packs down). Whether you stand up on a SUP, sit in a canoe or kayak, or crew a raft, these guidelines help you avoid the most common mistake — a paddle that is too heavy or badly sized and tires your shoulders within the first hour.

Length, matched to your height

  • SUP paddle (single blade): roughly your height + 15 to 25 cm. Our adjustable models cover a wide range (for example 170-215 cm) so you can dial it in to your body, the wind and your stroke.
  • Canoe-kayak paddle (double blade): length depends on your build and the width of the boat. A wider inflatable kayak calls for a slightly longer paddle than a narrow hardshell.
  • Raft paddle (single blade): shorter and tough for the crew, longer with a larger blade for the guide steering from the back.

Material, balancing weight and budget

  • Aluminium: strong, affordable and adjustable — ideal for beginners, rentals and occasional use.
  • Fibreglass: the best weight-to-price balance for regular paddling, comfortable and durable.
  • Carbon (and carbon-fibre): the lightest and liveliest option, for performance, long outings and joint comfort.

1, 2, 3 or 4 sections

A one-piece paddle is the stiffest and most direct. 2, 3 or 4-section versions break down for transport and storage — perfect for inflatable SUP, travel and packrafting. The more sections, the smaller the packed size.

Our paddle range

Aquadesign builds a paddle for every craft and every level. Our families cover three main uses, plus a selection dedicated to professionals.

Paddles for clubs, rental fleets and outdoor centres

A club paddle does not live the same life as a personal one: repeated knocks, constant handling, salt, sun and non-stop rotation. Our models built for collective use — such as the Runt paddle for outdoor centres or the reinforced-shaft Guide raft paddle — put robustness and longevity first. As a manufacturer, we offer tiered trade pricing and support to equip a full fleet with materials that survive an intensive season.

Why choose Aquadesign

Since 1988, Aquadesign has designed and manufactured its watersports gear in its own factories. We control our paddle ranges end to end: material selection (aluminium, fibreglass, carbon), shaft and blade assembly, quality control. The result is reliable products, responsive manufacturer after-sales service, available spare parts and genuine advice on picking the right length and material. Specialist quality, far from low-cost paddles, for individuals as well as clubs, rental operators and local authorities.

Frequently asked questions about paddles

What size SUP paddle should I choose?

The baseline is your height + 15 to 25 cm, adjusted to your practice: shorter for surf, longer for cruising and touring. Our adjustable paddles cover a wide range so you can find the right setting with confidence.

Aluminium, fibreglass or carbon: which paddle material?

Aluminium suits beginners, rentals and occasional use. Fibreglass offers the best weight-to-price ratio for regular paddling. Carbon, lighter and livelier, is aimed at frequent paddlers and performance, with real comfort on long sessions.

Is a break-down paddle less efficient?

A one-piece paddle stays the stiffest, but quality 2, 3 or 4-section models keep excellent rigidity while packing away easily. It is the logical choice for inflatable SUP, packrafting and transport.

How do I set a kayak paddle length?

Stand the paddle vertically in front of you, arm reaching up: your fingers should just curl over the top of the blade. Add a few centimetres if your kayak is wide (inflatable), take some off if it is narrow.

What is the difference between a crew and a guide raft paddle?

The crew uses a short, sturdy single paddle to paddle in rhythm. The guide, seated at the back, uses a longer paddle with a larger blade — like our Guide model — to steer and direct the raft precisely.

Do you offer paddles and pricing for clubs?

Yes. As a manufacturer, we equip clubs, rental fleets, outdoor centres and local authorities with rugged paddles and tiered trade pricing. Explore our dedicated selection in pro paddles.
