How to choose an inflatable canoe or kayak

A modern inflatable canoe-kayak has little in common with entry-level beach boats. At Aquadesign, we build hulls designed to truly paddle: glide, tracking and long-term durability. Before you choose, a few criteria make all the difference.

Canoe or kayak?

  • The inflatable kayak is paddled seated, legs forward, with a double-bladed paddle. Sleeker, it is favoured for speed, water touring and whitewater.
  • The inflatable canoe offers a higher seating position and generous load volume: ideal for groups, carrying children, a cooler and camping gear on easy-going descents.

Number of seats

  • 1 person: light and nimble, perfect for rivers, solo fishing and easy transport.
  • 2 persons: the best payload-to-comfort balance, for family or duo trips.
  • 3 persons: maximum volume and stability for social outings and carrying gear.

Construction: high-pressure dropstitch and Hypalon

An inflatable's stiffness depends on its construction. High-pressure dropstitch floors (thousands of threads linking two walls) tension under pressure to create a firm hull close to a hardshell kayak: better glide, better tracking and comfortable entry and exit. Hypalon delivers outstanding abrasion and UV resistance, prized for whitewater and heavy use. Depending on the model, expect around 3 PSI in the side tubes and 7 to 15 PSI in the dropstitch floor.

Why choose Aquadesign

A French brand, Aquadesign has designed its boats since 1988. We master the materials (high-tenacity PVC, dropstitch, Hypalon), thermo-welded assembly and CE compliance. The result: reliable, repairable and long-lasting boats, far from disposable products. Consider too the gear that extends the fun: canoe and kayak paddles, kayak seats, buoyancy aids and high-pressure pumps and inflators.

Frequently asked questions

Inflatable or hardshell kayak: which to choose?

A high-end inflatable (dropstitch or Hypalon) rivals a hardshell for the vast majority of leisure, touring and fishing uses, while packing into a bag and travelling without a roof rack or trailer. The hardshell keeps the edge in pure racing performance.

What pressure for an inflatable canoe-kayak?

It depends on the model and chamber. Classic side tubes sit around 2 to 3 PSI, while dropstitch floors often reach 7-15 PSI. Always follow the pressure marked on the boat and use a pump with a gauge.

How long does it take to inflate a kayak?

Allow 5 to 15 minutes with a double-action pump, depending on size and number of chambers. A 12V electric pump cuts this to a few minutes.

How long does an inflatable kayak last?

A quality, well-maintained boat easily lasts 8 to 12 years. Rinsing with clean water, drying fully before storage and keeping it out of direct sunlight are the habits that make all the difference.

Is an inflatable kayak easy to repair?

Yes. Our boats ship with a repair kit, and a micro-leak caught early is fixed in minutes. As a manufacturer, we also handle spare parts and after-sales support.

Which inflatable canoe-kayak for fishing?

Choose a stable dropstitch-floor model with attachment points, such as the Koloa X'Perience. Wide tubes let you stand up slightly to handle the rod, and storage zones hold your gear.
