Light Dropstitch: our technology built for lightness

At Aquadesign we build our inflatable stand up paddle boards with two in-house technologies. Light Dropstitch is the one we dedicated to lightness and accessibility. The goal is simple: a board you can lift with one hand, tuck under your arm down to the water and handle effortlessly, while keeping the rigidity you need to stand comfortably.

In practice, the Light Dropstitch construction optimises the dropstitch assembly to reduce the board's weight. The result is a SUP that is noticeably easier to carry and control than heavier boards, with no compromise on everyday stability. It's the ideal answer for anyone getting started, sharing a board with the family, or simply avoiding a heavy load on the walk to the beach.

Who are these lightweight boards for?

Our Light Dropstitch range was designed with clear uses in mind. It is a great fit for:

  • Lighter riders: a light board is more responsive and needs less power to get going, which builds confidence from the very first strokes.
  • Kids and teens: a central carry handle and a contained weight let young riders carry their own board to the water.
  • Families and beginners: contained lengths (around 10 feet) that stay manoeuvrable, stable and reassuring while learning.
  • Easy transport: inflatable, the board packs into its backpack, fits in a car boot and carries easily from the car park to the pontoon.

Carrying matters more than people think: it's the moment when a paddle session is most often abandoned. A board that is easy to carry is a board you actually use more often.

Lightness and rigidity: the right balance, the right pressure

Light does not mean soft. Our dropstitch fabrics are among the best on the market and deliver excellent stiffness once at the right pressure. We recommend inflating to 13 to 15 PSI: rigidity is already very good from 12 PSI, 13 PSI gives a pleasant flex for natural paddling, and 15 PSI provides the firmest feel. Our fabrics are tested well beyond that, but you should never exceed 18 PSI: over-inflating makes the board needlessly stiff and stresses the seams. Watch out for heat too (direct sun, hot sand, roof rack), which quickly raises pressure: deflate slightly if the board stays exposed. A high-pressure pump with a gauge is the best way to get it right.

As for thickness, remember it is a choice tied to your build and level, not a matter of quality: a thicker board (15 cm) adds volume and buoyancy, while a thinner board lowers the centre of inertia for more flex and lightness as you progress.

Our Light Dropstitch range

This collection brings together our most accessible, easy-going models, mostly around 10 feet: the convertible Orya 10' and Selka 10', the Kova 10'6, the Nyro 10'6, the Aelia 10'8, plus the SUP/kayak combo packs Django 10'8, LUCKEY 10'2 and LAVA 9'8. Versatile shapes, perfect for cruising and discovering the sport. To refine your choice by use, browse our versatile SUPs or the full stand up paddle range, and don't forget a matching SUP paddle.

Light or Fusion: which should you choose?

Our two technologies answer two different priorities, and we prefer to be honest about it. Light Dropstitch is all about lightness and accessibility: the right pick for families, lighter riders, beginners and short-to-medium boards. Fusion double-layer targets performance and durability: the double layer becomes essential on longer boards, and heat fusion adds extra rigidity while keeping weight under control. Frequently asked questions

Is a lightweight paddle board less stable?

No. Stability mainly depends on the board's width, thickness and length, not its weight. Our Light Dropstitch models around 10 feet are wide and stable, making them perfect for learning with confidence. Lightness simply makes carrying and relaunching easier.

How much does a Light Dropstitch stand up paddle weigh?

Weight varies by model and size, but our Light Dropstitch boards are deliberately lighter than our Fusion models, so they are easy to carry one-handed to the water, including by a child or teen thanks to the central handle.

What pressure should I inflate my board to?

Between 13 and 15 PSI. Rigidity is already excellent from 12 PSI; 13 PSI gives a good flex. Never exceed 18 PSI and watch out for heat, which raises pressure. A high-pressure pump with a gauge helps you get it right.

Is Light Dropstitch suitable for kids and families?

Yes, it's one of its strengths. Contained weight, an around-10-foot format, stability and a central carry handle make Light Dropstitch models excellent family boards, easy to share between several riders.

What's the difference between Light Dropstitch and Fusion Dropstitch?

Light Dropstitch prioritises lightness and accessibility, ideal for beginners, families and short-to-medium boards. Fusion Dropstitch prioritises performance and rigidity, essential on longer touring or racing boards. Explore our Fusion Dropstitch SUPs for more sporty use.

Is an inflatable board sturdy and repairable?

Yes. Our SUPs are built with dropstitch fabrics among the best on the market and are CE certified. If needed, our after-sales workshop in France (Oraison) has the spare parts and expertise to carry out repairs.
