How to choose your neoprene wetsuit
Neoprene traps a thin film of water that your body heats up: the thicker the material, the more it insulates. Your choice comes down to two factors, thickness and cut, matched to your water temperature and how hard you work in the water.
Thickness, by water temperature
- 1.5 mm: mild water and high output (Top Chrono top, Reeven Titanium pants). Ideal as a base layer or in warm conditions.
- 2.5 to 3 mm: the all-rounder, from spring to autumn. This is the thickness of the Zip, Standard and Men d long johns, the Tempa short and the Neo and Bounty shorties.
- 4 to 5 mm: cool water and longer sessions (Moby and Iceberg long johns, Keeps, Frio and Ice boleros).
- 7 mm: real cold, shaded canyons and snowmelt water, with the Rubber-lined Nagual long john.
Feel the cold easily? Go one step thicker. Very active in the water? Too much thickness will overheat you and restrict your movement.
Cut, by activity
- Long john: full legs, no sleeves. The go-to cut for kayaking and whitewater, freeing the shoulders to paddle.
- Shorty: short sleeves and legs, breathable, perfect for summer and club beginners.
- Bolero: a neoprene jacket layered over the long john to protect the torso and arms, with or without a hood.
- Short and pants: targeted lower-body protection, on their own or as an add-on.
Our neoprene range
We manufacture our full neoprene line for whitewater, with reinforced seams and protected abrasion zones at the key wear points.
- The long john wetsuits (Zip, Standard, Mook, Iceberg, Nagual, Men d) for full leg insulation.
- The neoprene shorties (Neo, Bounty) for summer sessions and versatility.
- The boleros (Frio, Spark, Ice, Keeps) to layer up against the cold.
- The shorts and pants (Tempa, Reeven, Hiptech) to protect the lower body.
- The neoprene socks and shoes and the gloves and pogies to keep extremities warm.
Every family also comes in a junior version, with the Zip Junior and Moby Junior long johns, the Neo Junior shorty and the Spark Junior bolero.
Neoprene built for whitewater
Unlike a surf wetsuit, our gear takes the knocks of rocks, capsizes and paddle rubbing. Knee and seat reinforcements, glued-and-blindstitched seams, protected YKK® zips: our long johns and boleros suit the kayaker as much as the canyoning or whitewater swimming enthusiast. For these disciplines, pair a thick long john with a bolero for a modular system that adapts to the season.
Why Aquadesign
A French brand, we have designed and manufactured, in our own factories, our whitewater gear since 1988. Our neoprene wetsuits meet the durability demands of intensive use, which is why clubs, water-sports centres, rental operators and local authorities trust us to equip their fleets. Child and adult sizes, tiered professional pricing, spare-part availability and after-sales support handled directly by the manufacturer: we support your seasons for the long run.
Frequently asked questions about neoprene
Which neoprene thickness should I choose for kayaking or whitewater?
Count on 2.5 to 3 mm for the warm season, 4 to 5 mm in cool water and up to 7 mm for real cold and shaded canyons. Adjust for your sensitivity to cold and how hard you work.
Long john or shorty: which one?
The long john fully protects the legs while freeing the arms: it is the reference for paddling and whitewater. The shorty, more breathable, suits summer outings and beginners. A bolero over the long john lets you adapt to the season.
How do I choose the right size?
Go by your chest and waist measurements, not the stated age. The suit should fit close to the body without squeezing: too much water inside reduces insulation. Refer to the size guide on each product page.
How do I care for my neoprene wetsuit?
Rinse in clean, cold water after every session, never hot water, which weakens the glue. Dry in the shade, away from UV, on a wide hanger or folded at the waist. Avoid the washing machine and regular detergent; a neoprene cleaner every few uses is enough.
Is neoprene suitable for children?
Yes, we offer junior models (Zip Junior, Moby Junior, Neo Junior, Spark Junior) cut for young users. As with adults, choose the size by chest measurement and go for a close fit.
Do you offer pricing for clubs and rental operators?
Yes. As a manufacturer, we apply tiered professional pricing and supply multi-size sets suited to water-sports centres, clubs and local authorities. Contact us for a quote.
